I tried to stay out of this, but after listening to and reading the latest news that Jon is suing for full custody of the couples eight children, I had to say something. After all, it is hard for me to keep my mouth shut most of the time. 🙂 First, I have to say I was a fan of the original show. I think I was amazed that this couple had so many children and seemed to make it work, at least for the first few seasons. Slowly, we saw them argue more and more and then everyone went after Kate on how she treated Jon. Poor Jon! Well, no more poor Jon. His antics over the last year have really shown why Kate was so frustrated with him sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I am not condoning how Kate treated Jon. But, Jon’s actions in the last lawsuit and now, filing for full custody alleging that Kate is an “absentee parent”, is just plain ludicrous and downright insulting to single moms everywhere.
Yes, I was a single mom and this is probably why this rubs me the wrong way. I worked 2, sometimes 3 jobs at a time to make ends meet and to take care of my 2 sons. When I was first divorced I didn’t even own a car. Getting my 2 sons to daycare involved riding bikes everyday, believe me I know how hard single moms with custody and single dads with custody work to keep things going. Jon’s actions frankly irritate me to no end. As a paralegal working in Family Law, I have seen the non-custodial parent file motions like this because they simply want to stop paying child support and think that the working parent should give them child support, not to mention custody.
I was watching a program last night on TV, I won’t name names, but Jon’s attorney was on saying that poor Jon was barred from working because of the lawsuit he previously filed against TLC to end the Kate plus 8 show. I have to say I have never heard of anything as crazy as this!! I doubt that any Court would allow an agreement that a non-custodial parent who has an order to pay in excess of $20,000 a month in child support, is not allowed to work to help support his children! It is always the best interests of the children and having a parent not work and not help support them is not in the best interests of the children.
Today I read that Kate will be getting 2 new shows next season and has a book coming out this month. She will be earning money to support the children. She is also making money for every episode of Dancing with the Stars. Money that is also used to support the children. As for being an “absentee parent” I simply don’t see it. She practices for the show at home so she can be with the children, how does that make her absent? Yes, she is gone for a couple days each week doing the show. Is this any different from a parent who travels periodically for work? Should we make sure that any parent who travels for work, never has custody of their children?
I will personally be paying attention to this case to see how it plays out. I am hoping that the legal system remembers the children in this case, and does what is in their best interests.
